please let there be girls that always love their dad and never ever in their whole lives say they hate him. and please let mine be one of them.
i can’t stand the thought of my girl growing up and not liking me. not even if it’s just for 5 minutes. she’s just so sweet and innocent and beautiful and i always want to be her best friend and i am an absolute mess when i think about...

livin' the dream
i put in my two weeks at costco this past monday.
i’m going to build websites and work from home.
sarah isn’t going to go back to her job, she’s going to stay home with the baby Olive.
we’re both going to stay home with the baby Olive.
i was pursuing a regular “real job” for a while, but freelance is the position i wanted to be in eventually anyway, so why...

I was going through some old stuff and came across a folder from one of my college reading/writing classes. I miss those kind of classes. but i found a paragraph I had written down by hand, and I think it;s the first or last paragraph of a short story called “Snow” by Ann Beatie:
This is a story, told the way you say stories should be told. Somebody grew up, fell in love and spent a...
Bats
Today the score became Jarrod 5, Bats 0. At about 5:30 this morning the dogs were rustling and I heard the sound of bat squeaks in the hall outside my room. I thought, “yay.”
His under the blankets until I could get my eyes to adjust and I saw Ginny and Burton chasing the bat around and hitting it to the ground. At one point I heard the bat squeaks stop and then Burton lazily hopped...
24
not the show, the age. it’s my age now.
had pretty much the best birthday yet yesterday. my lovely and awesome and amazing wife got me 24 gifts/surprises for the occasion. they were as follows (in no particular order)
pay day candy bar
bike pump (to get our bikes ready for the road
socket wrench extensions
guinness pudding (she made it)
breakfast in bed yesterday morning
another pay...

question...
what’s the proper reaction when you find out your mom is getting married via a wedding invite sent in the mail?
all i’ve got so far is “dumbfounded.”
It baffles me to try and think how people who have supposedly studied the Bible enough to figure out when the rapture is, also missed the line in there about how no one but the Father knows the appointed time.
Seriously.
teach you a lesson
i”ve grown very tired of and frustrated with the mindset that God purposefully causes or “allows” accidents/injuries/tragedies etc in lives to make us “slow down,” “consider our path,” “bring us closer to Him,” or any other reason you can think of.
God is smart. He can think of a better way to get you to slow down than breaking your leg. And...
and i bet you have thoughts too
kind of appalled at the number of people (especially “Christians”) celebrating, specifically, the killing and death of a man. i’m glad that a leader of a group of killers is no longer leading, but i’m not celebrating that we sent a group of our killers to kill.
last night i read a sort of life story of Osama, and Sarah and I watched a Tedx talk on (basically) the sociology...

Matthias replaces Judas
Anna posted a short piece on matthias replacing judas in acts after Jesus has left them and it reminded me of something I wanted to write about.
The choosing of Matthias is a perfect example of doing things the wrong way.
Jesus told the disciples to wait a few days for the Holy Spirit to come. They couldn’t help but try to fulfill scripture by their own hands and replace Judas with their...
we’re so afraid that prayer won’t work that we take things into our own hands instead of having faith that God will take care of it.
it’s not our job to make things come to pass, it’s our job to believe. if God put a dream in your heart, it’s not your responsibility to chase after it, it’s your responsibility to follow Him. He’ll take you there the right...

My pregnant wife is beautiful. She’s radiant. She’s stunning. She’s adorable.
And I like to call her pregosaurus and pregopotamus. In a nice way.
She’s awesome.
i wish i could fast all 40 days for lent. it’s just so inconvenient to do so. maybe i’ll go for seven.
and i mean a real fast. just water.
the longest i’ve gone is 3 days.
first day is easy. second day sucks because everything smells so good. third day gets better.
another time i’ll explain why it’s (biblically) good to do it.
this morning has me grumpy though....

pricing
i think it’s funny that a certain book is going on amazon from a range of $70-$131.24 (from $15.01-$80.62 used) and the author has it available free to download in .pdf form on their website.
of course, it really is worth every dollar, and then ten times that. and then some. many times over.
but free is better.

conformity
Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
conforming is a funny thing. interesting, really. it happens to us without us even realizing it. it’s actually natural for us. our souls (mind, emotions, will) are built to conform.
think about the thing...
bill
in my dream this morning bill kahler was doing a man vs wild kind of adventure and he was talking about the dangers of giant snakes in the area while one was creeping up next to him.
he’s so hardcore.
so, babies...
We’re having one.
and it’s hard to describe the feeling i get knowing i’m going to be a dad. the only word I can think of is immense.
and i figure it’ll feel about 47x more immense when I actually hold that little miracle for the first time.
it’s unplanned, but not unwanted. (well, i guess it was planned, but baby decided a few years ahead of schedule would be...

Twitter has been pretty cool lately for seeing things pass around the Internet. This morning a friend from grand rapids tweeted about a cool site (benthebodyguard.com) and this evening a friend in San Francisco tweeted about the same site.
Maybe this makes me a nerd.
And in other news I wish my dog didn’t fart every 4 minutes when he’s sleeping and only a few feet away from me.

unfortunately you should be prepared for either, because that’s what you’ll get. there are a lot of people upset about this because allowing this sort of invasive search is degrading, as well as a slippery slope. Where else will they want to place these types of searches at in the name of safety? Trains? Buses? All federal buildings? It’s letting our civil liberties (i think i...

These are from a book called “Disorder in the American Courts,” and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters that had the torment of staying calm while these exchanges were actually taking place.

guard dog
last night on tv there were some bears. once my dog noticed there were dangerous bears about to break through the tv and enter the room, he jumped up near the tv and began to growl and bark at them, while giving them a serious staredown.
it must have worked, because the bears never came through the tv, they stayed put.
thanks Burton, you saved the day.

wild wild westernized culture
it makes me sick to see how much my sister has become like “everyone else.”
so much worldliness seeped right in. i think that kind of thing sinks into your skin through too much makeup.
of course i’m being a little dramatic…
but i’m scared to have a daughter in this world and if i do she’ll be pretty but nobody will ever know it because i’ll keep her...
i got healed today
well, it wasn’t exactly today. but it was proved today.
i went to the dentist today to get a cavity filled. a couple weeks ago at my checkup and cleaning, they said i’d need a cavity filled in one tooth.
over the past few days, i started really putting into practice what i’ve learned about prayer.
And I prayed for my tooth. I prayed that it would be whole and when I went to...
